THE OFFICIAL STUDENT PUBLICATION OF THE LEYTE COLLEGES

The Philippines, led by a woman president, is one of the nations suffering from internal and external turmoil. Children suffer and so do the older ones. Nowadays, it seems difficult, if not impossible, to return the peace and tranquility that our country once had. The country's situation is being aggravated by the war happening in countries from which we are dependent on. Now the question is: can the Philippines survive? Can President Gloria alleviate the Filipino people from poverty? Will this war end? The answer lies not only in her hands but in ours, too.

600 cadets turn reservists  By Soriano JM

Six hundred cadet private and fourteen cadet officers were declared graduates by Col. Virgilio Palencia, Group Commander of 8th Reserve Command RCDG ARESCOM during the Joint Advance and Basic NSP Graduation Exercises last March 10, 2002 at the LNHS Gymnasium.

Leyte Colleges President Dr. Virginio Astilla assisted Dr. Manuel Z. Isanan, the guest speaker, in giving the awards to the deserving Cadets and Officers. Major Lester Lee Calaycay, the overall coordinator of the LC ROTC Unit, received credit for his supervision. Among the awardees was Corps Commander Alberto Caber who received three medals.

Prior to the graduation rites, Mr. Caber highlighted himself when he threw a punch on a cadet from the affiliated Asian Development Foundation College and pushed others aside without hesitation and justifiable cause. This was not the first time he did this in front of other cadets. This could be his (way) of disciplining stubborn cadets - a legacy he wishes to leave to his juniors.

WHAT'S NEW?
By Shyrine Lumagbas

This column intends to praise good things which take place in our school, may they be big or little, to seek improvement for those that need development, and to look at things as they are -- without any bias. The writer believes that as we give credit to the good things that the administration provides, the more that they would provide for more, inorder to make better our dear Alma Mater. Critics, as well, are vital forces that serve as eye-openers for the administration, faculty, and the students. These make them more aware of things that they ought to know and change. We are trying to extend fairness pursuant to our primary role as campus journalists - to spread (only) balanced and true information.

**********

The school year has ended and summer is in the air. I am sure that the freshmen enjoyed their first year stay in this institution. For sure, many things have taken place in this school that some of us failed to recognize and appreciate. Let us check them out!

**********

Let's start at the Finance Office. Thumbs up to their Assessment-Releasing Department as they are now releasing assessment slips two weeks before the examination period. Students as well as the parents now have a longer time to prepare money for tuition fees. Great!

**********

But wait...before we go any further (from the Finance Office, that is) have you noticed the guards? They are not that strict when it comes to the inspection of IDs. Why is this so? I do not know if I am right but as far as I am concerned, some students were not given ID clips, so they just keep their ID's in their pockets or in some pages of their books as book marks instead of pinning them for identification purposes. As far as we know ID clips are included in the P35.00 ID fee. But on second thought, the guards are also right not to ask for IDs. It's enough for the students to come in the school campus wearing complete uniform. Good work, Mr. Guards!

**********

Visit also LC San Jose Campus. Criminology students have been provided with a library of their own.

**********

Once again, the Leyte Times Editorial Board and Publication Staff bagged awards for the school during the Regional Tertiary Schools Press Conference (RTSPC) Last October; add to that the awards brought by Editor-in-Chief Ms. Reylyn Seno during the Regional and National tilts on Taxation. She was champion during the Regional tilt and First Runner-Up during the National contest. Congratulations!

**********

Notice also the new typewriters at the Paterno Campus. (They don't look that obsolete anymore.)

**********

The staff would like to thank the Alpha Phi Omega Epsilon Omega Chapter for the mirror they have donated to the LT Office through their Grand Lady Chancellor, Reylyn Seno. Thanks a lot guys.

**********

Have you been to the library these days? Well, if you haven't, you should go there and see for yourselves how conducive a place for studying our library has now become because of two aircondition units that are now functioning. You guys can now stay there for a loooonger time. You also go there to see the increasing number of students who are reading newspapers. Sometimes they even have to endure waiting for an hour or more so that they could take their turn at reading the papers. But is this just because there are airconditioning units and cooling ourselves is free? Well, whatever their reasons are, they should still be lauded because they become more aware of the daily hot news items.

All these are all worth mentioning and commending!
